(NEXSTAR) – More lithium-ion-powered products have been recalled after they allegedly caused a person’s death, more than 300 reports of burn injuries and over a dozen fires.

Roughly 1.5 million OCOOPA rechargeable hand warmers are being recalled due to a “risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Thursday.

The China-based manufacturer of the hand warmers received nearly 1,500 reports of the items overheating. Among those reports was the death of an 83-year-old in San Diego, California. There were also 15 fires caused by the hand warmers, and 350 burn injuries, the recall notice explains.

The hand warmers were sold on Amazon and Walmart’s website as well as Ocoopa.com and Ocoopa.net from September 2018 through May of this year. The model numbers below, found on the bottom of the hand warmers, are impacted:

These models were available in a variety of colors and designs and were sold in packs of two with a USB-C port to charge the lithium-ion batteries. The hand warmers could be joined with a magnet and have their temperature adjusted, with LED indicator lights found on their hard plastic shell. They also have a silicone lanyard and “OCOOPA” printed on the top of them.

If you have a recalled OCOOPA hand warmer, you’re encouraged not to use it. Instead, the CPSC says you should contact OCOOPA Direct for a refund, which will come as either an OCOOPA gift card or funds returned to the original form of payment. You are also asked to write “RECALLED” in permanent marker and take a picture of it, along with its model number and batch number, and submit it to OCOOPA’s website.

Death, fire on plane spark lithium-ion battery-related recall

Earlier this year, the CPSC reissued a recall for portable device chargers, powered by lithium-ion batteries, following the death of a 75-year-old woman and several fires on planes.

Casely had recalled its Power Banks 5000mAh portable MagSafe wireless phone chargers in 2025 following a string of “reports of the lithium-ion battery overheating, expanding or catching fire.”

However, more than two dozen additional consumer complaints were submitted following the recall, including the death of a New Jersey woman who died of complications she experienced after a charger caught fire and exploded in her lap.

Because of the lithium batteries within them, portable chargers have prompted concerns across airlines. Several have updated their policies to limit how many each passenger can have and where it can be stored during flights.
