Two people in Michigan who contracted cyclosporiasis have died, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services said Monday.

The department noted both people had “significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration,” citing medical records.

Michigan officials as of Monday have reported 11,234 cases of cyclosporiasis, which causes watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss and other stomach-related issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As of Thursday, 193 people in Michigan were hospitalized with the parasitic infection, according to the state health department.

Officials from the CDC, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health agencies are investigating a cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce in nine states. Taylor Farms, which sourced the lettuce from central Mexico, on July 17 voluntarily recalled all iceberg lettuce grown in the region.

That is just one of multiple cyclosporiasis outbreaks health officials are monitoring, with the CDC saying 45 states have reported cases. As of last Tuesday, the CDC has received reports of 6,707 laboratory-confirmed U.S. cases of the infection and was aware of 11,500-plus additional cases that are not laboratory confirmed or require further investigation or analysis.

The federal public health agency also said Monday it is “aware” of the two deaths in Michigan and is updating its website to including the number of laboratory-confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

The CDC recommends avoiding recalled lettuce, washing potentially contaminated items and surfaces with hot, soapy water or a dishwasher, and contacting your health provider if you show any symptoms of cyclosporiasis. Symptoms usually begin roughly one week after infection.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services noted Monday the infection is “generally not a life-threatening illness,” and death from cyclosporiasis is “uncommon” in the U.S.
