A new Politico poll reported 3 in 5 Americans believe gas prices in their area rose more than it actually has.

The results stated that roughly 1 in 4 Americans thought gas in their zip code had risen by $3 or more which has not actually occurred in any zip code in the U.S. as of July.

The average price of gas was reported Monday to be exactly $4, which it had been approaching since the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran fell apart. Before the conflict, the national average hovered around $3.

Oil prices have spiked with international benchmark Brent crude crossing the $100 mark, with futures trading at about $101 per barrel, up more than $25 from where it was trading during the U.S.-Iran ceasefire in July.

Meanwhile, uncertainty about the strait grows. Houthi rebels in Yemen said on Thursday that they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, which is situated on the other side of the Arabian Peninsula.

As the ceasefire ended, Iran began firing on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane that transports about a fifth of the world’s oil flow during peacetime. Despite hostilities restarting, Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Sunday said the U.S. “will continue to assure flow of traffic” through the Strait of Hormuz.

The poll added that 46 percent of voters say the change in gas prices is impacting their vote for primaries and midterms. It highlighted a divide among Republican voters with self-identified MAGA Republicans more likely to underestimate cost increases to gas prices than non-MAGA Republicans.

Support for the war has also dropped by 13 points among Trump voters, according to a Wednesday Politico poll.

“President Trump and his energy team anticipated these temporary market disruptions, communicated them openly to the American people, and implemented an aggressive plan to mitigate any impacts,” said White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers. “As the U.S. military degrades the terrorist Iranian regime’s ability to attack commercial vessels and disrupt the free flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz, oil and gas prices will plummet back to pre-conflict levels.”
