The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced plans Tuesday to monitor election certification as a part of a $50 million investment in midterm races, citing potential threats to voters’ ability to access and cast their ballots.

The nonpartisan, nonprofit has already deployed thousands of staffers to battleground states including Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania to combat election interference and voter disenfranchisement, per a Tuesday release.

Additional ACLU volunteers will also be dispersed to sites across the country after completing poll-monitoring, voting rights and legal standards training funded by the group’s $24.5 million investment in election safeguarding.

The push comes as President Trump has shared plans to federalize elections and has urged lawmakers to pass the SAVE America Act to overhaul voting requirements. The legislation would ensure proof of citizenship and photo ID are provided before individuals can cast a ballot in addition to placing strict limits on mail in ballots.

His executive order aiming to purge voter rolls and create a centralized database containing Social Security numbers along with information about voters’ citizenship status was blocked by a federal judge on Monday, in a blow to Trump’s election reform agenda.

“Our right to vote is facing a coordinated attack on multiple fronts. But in a democracy, people choose their politicians, not the other way around,” Deirdre Schifeling, ACLU Chief Political and Advocacy Officer, said in a statement.

“When access to the ballot is restricted and the results of elections are not respected, the very foundation of our democracy hangs in the balance. That is why the ACLU is launching the largest ever election safeguarding program in our century-long history,”  Schifeling added.

Some lawmakers fear efforts to deploy immigration officers at polling sites will spark another deterrent for voters nationwide.

The ACLU is currently involved in over 80 legal actions challenging discriminatory voting laws, racial gerrymandering, attacks on mail voting and voter registration.

“We’re already in the thick of litigation to champion voters’ rights around the country, and we are preparing for more fights as November approaches,” Sophia Lin Lakin, Director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, said in a statement.

“Suppress votes, rig the rules, or undermine election results — and you’ll see us in court.”
