Designer collaborations aren’t new territory for mass retailers, but Old Navy is becoming increasingly specific about whom it invites into its world.

The retailer’s latest partner is Joseph Altuzarra, the New York designer known for romantic femininity, precise tailoring and collections that often begin with a story. The collaboration dropped online on Sept. 30, with pieces ranging from $25 to $140.

Since launching his namesake label in 2008, Altuzarra has become a fixture of the American fashion calendar and a red carpet favorite. Rihanna has worn his thigh-high-slit separates and sat front row at his shows, while Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett and Lana Del Rey have all worn the label. Jennifer Lawrence also turned to Altuzarra for a heavily embroidered silk organza skirt at CinemaCon in 2016.

Those celebrity moments make sense in the context of Altuzarra’s runway vocabulary. His Spring 2015 collection, for example, played prim gingham and traditional shirting against dangerously high slits, sensual draping and dresses inspired by Rosemary’s Baby and Barry Lyndon. The collection culminated in a trio of dramatically deflated 18th-century-inspired gowns. By Resort 2016, an ikat-paneled dress emerged as an immediate standout, alongside intricately beaded pieces and hand-worked outerwear.

More recently, the designer has shifted some of that attention toward individual wardrobe pieces. For Spring 2025, a cropped suede jacket and long cotton chino skirt became two of the collection’s best sellers with wholesale buyers. Literature remained part of the equation, translated into papery textures, folded details and marbled prints rather than simply serving as a narrative backdrop.

Now, his Old Navy debut brings those ideas to a much different price bracket. The 44-piece Old Navy x Altuzarra collection ranges from $25 to $140 and draws heavily from romantic literature, particularly Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice. Altuzarra envisioned the clothes against a windswept Scottish landscape, an idea that comes to life through moody florals, velvet dresses, Fair Isle sweaters and long, fluid silhouettes.

Altuzarra’s penchant for movement comes through in this floral maxi, finished with a draped scarf neckline and barely there straps.

But some of the collection’s strongest pieces come from combining that romanticism with Old Navy’s bread and butter. An embroidered barn jacket (now sold out) puts a decorative spin on the workwear staple, while wide-leg jeans and casual outerwear bring Altuzarra’s proportions into pieces designed for everyday wardrobes. Balloon pants and tiered skirts introduce a slightly more directional, ’90s-grunge sensibility, with Alexa Chung fronting the campaign.

Look closely and there are recognizable pieces of the designer’s higher-end world throughout. The fluid dresses echo the draping that has long been part of his runway language, while statement outerwear has become an increasingly important category for the brand. His Fall 2026 runway, for example, was particularly heavy on leather and shearling bombers, toggle coats, cocoon-shaped peacoats and sweeping silhouettes.

At Old Navy, those ideas have been distilled into more approachable barn jackets, bombers and knits rather than reproduced outright.

For shoppers willing to venture beyond the straight leg, these balloon trousers bring runway-minded volume to an otherwise classic black pant.

The partnership is also part of a larger creative strategy at Old Navy. Gap Inc. executive vice president and creative director Zac Posen has positioned the retailer’s collaboration series as a platform for American designers, beginning with Anna Sui and followed by Christopher John Rogers.

Altuzarra is the third designer to join that lineup, but his collection introduces another first: matching styles across women’s, girls’ and toddler categories. The expansion has a personal connection for the designer, who has children of his own.
