Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) doubled down Wednesday on his criticism of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) absence from Congress during his medical recovery from a fall last month.

In an interview on the SiriusXM “Andy Beshear Podcast,” the Democratic governor told co-host John Fugelsang that the longtime Kentucky senator was “ruining” the legacy McConnell believes he has built.

“Listen, I think his legacy is one of over-politicizing everything in the Senate. I don’t think it’s a positive legacy, but I know he thinks his legacy is being the longest-serving majority leader in the Senate’s history,” the governor said.

“Well, guess what? On his Wikipedia page five years from now that’s going to be a paragraph, but what we’re going through right now is going to be a page,” he continued.

Several Republicans have criticized Beshear’s attacks on McConnell, accusing him of being opportunistic. Beshear is widely seen as a prospective Democratic candidate for president in 2028.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) accused the Democratic governor of using the 84-year-old’s absence as a “campaign ploy” after Beshear called on McConnell in a Monday letter to face his constituents directly or resign.

Beshear responded directly to Paul’s criticism during the Wednesday podcast interview.

“Well, Rand Paul is another Republican U.S. senator from Kentucky in D.C. right now,” Beshear said.

“He hauled in an 85-year-old Anthony Fauci, saying you must answer to the people of America, and he won’t do the same for Mitch McConnell,” he continued, referring to Paul’s role in a Senate probe into the scientist’s oversight of the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other Republican lawmakers and strategists have denounced the Kentucky governor’s criticism of McConnell’s absence.

“Andy Beshear is just a disgraceful, attention-seeking whore, and this is all part of that,” Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) told The Hill on Tuesday.

Similarly, Sen. Jim Justice (R-W.Va.) called the governor’s request a “disgrace” and expressed his support for McConnell throughout his medical event.

The Office of the Attending Physician (OAP), which serves the medical needs of members of Congress, said in a statement shared Monday by McConnell’s office that the Kentucky senator was not yet medically cleared to return to his official duties.

“OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care,” the office wrote. “Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls.”
