“Resident Evil” earned $26.3 million domestically across 3,684 screens on opening day, making it far and away the No. 1 new release on Friday. By Sunday, Sony’s new take on the horror franchise is expected to make around $55 million, making it the largest debut in “Resident Evil” franchise history. (2010’s “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” previously the highest-grossing installment, made $26 million at the box office over its opening weekend.)
