Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday during a press conference that Canada is prepared to respond to President Trump’s threat of 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods if intensified negotiations for a comprehensive trade agreement fall through.
“We’re ready because we have been focusing on what we can control,” Carney said. “If these tariffs, or other measures come into force, there’s a full range of things that we can do in that regard.”
On Monday, Trump placed an additional 50 percent tariff on certain goods that ranged from dairy products to cement to hockey sticks.
The tariffs fall under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and will go into effect 30 days after signing, an administration official told reporters when the tariffs first hit.
Some goods on the list were previously protected by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The agreement is set to expire in 2036 after a nonrenewal by the U.S.
Carney said “everything’s on the table” if an agreement can’t be reached before the tariffs kick in.
These tariffs were brought because of Canada’s newly imposed 25 percent tax on cars and trucks, according to the Trump administration. This came after the U.S. brought similar tariffs on Canadian auto plants.
Trump also expressed frustration that European cheesemakers were allowed to import more into Canada than the U.S. and that provinces in Canada were pulling American products from government-owned liquor stores, The New York Times reported.
The administration has called Canada’s actions “discriminatory” trade measures.
Canada is paying a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum products, a 10 percent tariff on all Canadian softwood timber and lumber imports in addition to a 12.5 percent tariff over forced labor, which was implemented last month.
Carney suggested that Trump’s tariff threat could be a negotiation tool as a comprehensive agreement is still not announced.
“We’ve seen a series of trade negotiations that the U.S. has undertaken, and normally there’s a deadline,” he said. “Normally there’s an outsized tariff associated with that deadline.”
The 50 percent tariff on the country is expected to take effect Aug. 19.
