Democratic political strategist James Carville on Sunday said David Hogg, former Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice chair, should succeed current chair Ken Martin, calling the DNC “dysfunctional.”

Carville, who explained he was recovering from hernia surgery, said in a video posted to YouTube that he wanted to weigh in on The New York Times’s reporting on Martin and the DNC.

The report alleges that Martin has been under pressure amid financial woes within the party and — as the Times writes — is “gripped by fear that he will lose his job and relying on a vanishingly small circle of people he trusts.”

“It was a story on a DNC that basically said it’s dysfunctional,” Carville said. “It’s just difficult to do anything with it, and it’s all true. And at the end of the day, who cares?”

Carville said that some of the DNC’s leaders could “get themselves together” and “figure out a way maybe they could be somewhat relevant, I have no idea.”

“If David Hogg wants to take it over, I ain’t stopping you,” he continued. “Go ahead, man, I don’t really care. And I don’t think, at the end of the day, well, they might be fine people. I know some of them are not particularly determined.”

Hogg also reacted to the Times’s reporting, writing on social media that the DNC should not be led by someone “who can’t raise money.”

“Let alone someone who throws stuff at staff and can’t raise money,” Hogg added.

The Times noted that Martin threw a phone toward an aide earlier this month in frustration, which prompted a human resources complaint. Martin later met with human resources, according to sources who spoke with the Times.

Carville said readers of the Times story can “have a little fun, read the DNC story about he threw, I don’t know, a saltshaker — I don’t know — threw something at a desk. Oh, God forbid that would ever happen.”

The newspaper’s story also reported that the national party previously asked vendors not to send over invoices for services until after the November election amid anxiety over the DNC’s finances.

Sources also told the outlet that Martin has seen his inner circle decrease to a small number of confidantes. They said that he has joked about his job’s stability.

Martin became DNC chair in February 2025 as the national party contended with the financial stressors after agreeing to cover former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign debt.

He also faced scrutiny over his reversal on releasing an autopsy report on the 2024 election. Martin later said the report did not meet his “standards” while he faced backlash over the report’s contents, including a lack of acknowledgment of former President Biden’s age or party divisions over Israel and its war in Gaza.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) backed Martin with his “full support” after the Times story was published.

“We look forward to our continued partnership,” Jeffries said while campaigning in Pennsylvania, according to NOTUS.
