Ciara Miller Gets a Reality Check

If you watch reality TV, Ciara Miller has been almost impossible to avoid lately. If you don’t watch reality TV, allow us to introduce the woman who apparently has been cast on all of it.

There’s Summer House, the Bravo series she joined in 2021. Last year came Peacock’s The Traitors. This summer, she flew to Fiji to co-host Love Island USA: Aftersun. And on Sept. 15, having apparently exhausted the available supply of reality shows on NBCUniversal, she’ll turn up on ABC for season 35 of Dancing With the Stars.

“The last couple months from Love Island to Summer House to Dancing With the Stars, that’s obviously insane,” Miller says. “It’s still kind of what I would call a mindfuck at times, where I’m so happy about all of the opportunities, and I’m quite literally living my dream.”

Miller has been everywhere but to-her-self all at once: She’s careful about what she puts on plate, and she won’t say yes to every opportunity.

“I’m just not that type to say yes to everything,” she says. “I also don’t want people to be so sick of me either. There comes a point where I’m like, you know what? I’m sick of seeing myself. So I’m sure maybe some people are sick of seeing me too. Take a little bit of a break, space things out.”

It’s not exactly the career path the 30-year-old Miller envisioned growing up in Atlanta. She modeled as a teenager but went on to earn a nursing degree in 2018, eventually working as a traveling ICU nurse. When COVID hit, she found herself treating patients at a Brooklyn hospital.

Her route from intensive care to reality TV was surprisingly direct: through a boyfriend. She’d been dating Luke Gulbranson, then a castmember on Summer House, Bravo’s long-running series about a group of attractive young New Yorkers who spend their weekends drinking, hooking up and occasionally screaming at each other in the Hamptons. In 2020, Gulbranson invited her to join him in the house for season five.

She never really left.

Six years later, Miller has become one of Bravo’s more recognizable faces, parlaying Summer House into appearances on Winter House and The Traitors, then the Love Island hosting job and now Dancing With the Stars. She’d been trying to land that last one for a while.

“I have talked to the Dancing With the Stars team for the past two years,” she says. “So when they wanted to have a call this year, I was like, ‘Absolutely, let’s do our yearly call because I’m obviously trying to be on the show.’”

This time, the answer was yes. And as it happens, DWTS may be the one reality show Miller has been inadvertently preparing for most of her life.

Long before the ICU or Bravo, she studied ballet, jazz and hip-hop. Miller calls herself “the show pony of my family” and remembers constantly staging homemade music videos for her grandmother, who took her to see Alvin Ailey performances.

“I was always choreographing a music video for my grandmother to watch. Poor her — I mean, she would be proud of me picking up a pencil, literally anything,” Miller says. “[DWTS] is really a full-circle moment, coming back to my dancing roots and being able to perform on a stage this big.”

Of course, there is a downside to spending six years turning your life into television: Eventually, your life becomes television.

Miller learned that rather spectacularly this spring. She had been romantically involved with fellow Summer House castmember West Wilson when Wilson and Amanda Batula — one of Miller’s closest friends on the reality series — announced they were together. The very public betrayal left Miller wondering whether she wanted to return for season 11 and spend another summer under the same roof with the people involved. Wilson and Batula subsequently exited, while Miller stayed.

“I definitely was very much on the fence about coming back to Summer House, full disclosure,” she says. But walking away would also have meant letting what happened determine what she did next.

“I also felt like I’ve been in that house since I was 24, and these are my friends. Why wouldn’t I spend my summer how I’ve been spending my summer?” Miller says. “And to let a situation dictate where I’m going to be, I wasn’t willing to do that.”

So she went back. And now, with Dancing With the Stars about to start, Miller is heading into yet another reality show — albeit one where, for once, all the drama is supposed to happen on the dance floor, but somehow always makes its way online.

Reality TV can be a breeding ground for negativity, on- and off-screen. Miller has experience navigating the viciousness that can be the Bravo audiences, but she also was faced with criticism this summer from Love Island fans for her Aftersun hosting style. Dancing With the Stars fans are no angels either, and oftentimes, viewers’ pessimism centers mainly around a celebrity’s dance capabilities.

Being judged on by performance rather than personality on a reality show “will be a whole different experience” for Miller. She also knows that’s “part of the experience” of Dancing With the Stars, but it won’t define her time on the series.

“I don’t think you’re ever really prepared for the fandom, but I’ve been warmed up with the Bravo crowd, and honestly, even the Love Island fans, because they are a whole type of breed,” Miller says. “I’d like to say that I’m a little accustomed to fan feedback, and that’s great. We welcome it. Here’s the thing: You say thank you when you need to, and put your head down when you also need to.”

Miller “love[s] to hear” viewer’s opinions, because “sometimes you can’t take their input and kind of tweak it and put your own spin on things.” But part of staying in the unscripted business is not paying mind to that negativity.

“I don’t really ride the waves of what the fan response is typically, and that’s, a lot of times, how I get through it on Summer House and even Love Island,” she says. “I like to see what everyone has to say, and I love that people will be talking about it. And hopefully, they’re nice. You just pray.”

On Summer House, Miller knows she’s known for lounging in bed, so much so that her friend group was dubbed “Bed Bugs.” But on Dancing With the Stars, she’s ready to show off her competitive side. “I know part of my persona is being horizontal and in the bed, so people are really going to see me out of the bed,” Miller says. “People can only call me lazy for so much longer.”

Much of Miller’s career has been dominated by reality TV. Her heart and soul are concentrated on Dancing With the Stars right now, but that doesn’t mean she’s not thinking ahead about a career away from cameras.

“My wheels are always turning in terms of where I want to land and what would make sense for me as a landing pad post-reality TV. Because look, I’ll be honest, I’m not the reality TV girl that’s gonna get married on TV and have my kids on TV,” Miller admits. “The chances of that happening are slim to none. I’m a Capricorn. I’m always thinking five years ahead. But at this point in time, at this juncture, I’m not quite sure. I’m still figuring that out.”
