Cinema United CEO Michael O’Leary spends a lot of time on the road, checking in with movie theater owners as they engage in a long, often painful, comeback from COVID. It’s been six years since the pandemic forced cinemas to close, and while the box office has rebounded substantially from those dark days, it’s still a shadow of what it was before the plague years. As the head of the exhibition industry’s largest trade organization — sort of the cinema boss, as it were — O’Leary hears those frustrations, but he says the business has turned a corner, particularly with Gen Z showing up in greater numbers.
