Congo’s Ministry of Health on Sunday confirmed that there are more than 1,000 cases of Ebola in the country.

The ministry reported that there have been 1,003 cumulative confirmed cases and 254 cumulative deaths. Most cases are in the Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.

Health workers fear that a displacement camp in Ituri filled with 20,000 people will soon become a breeding ground for the virus.

On Friday, camp officials said 10 people died from unusual circumstances, increasing concerns for a potential outbreak, although there are no confirmed Ebola cases on-site, according to The Associated Press

Response teams in Congo are currently caring for 365 patients who are in isolation or hospitalization.

Poor protective equipment and a lack of infection-control measures have contributed to an increase in cases. The contact follow-up rate currently sits at 58 percent, according to Congolese health officials.

Contact tracing has also been limited, as initial signs of the Bundibugyo strain often resemble symptoms caused by malaria or other illnesses.

The Ebola virus can also persist in semen long after a male survivor has recovered from the initial illness, which can cause the disease to transfer through sex or other bodily fluids, including blood, urine and feces.

Currently, women represent the most affected category for the virus, while cases among children are increasing, per the United Nations News

Initially, men aged 20 to 49 years were the group most affected by the virus.

Dr. Rose Belizaire, emergency response lead at the World Health Organization’s regional office in Africa, said this is likely because women serve as caretakers for their family members, husbands and parents.

Belizaire told UN News that the Congolese officials “lacked the logistical support required to put in place a robust response” at the start of the Ebola outbreak, which has limited the ability to weed out the new strain of the virus.

There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or specific antiviral treatments for the Bundibugyo strain.

Survival depends entirely on early medical intervention to manage symptoms and keep the patient alive while their immune system fights off the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Congolese health officials reported that 100 people have successfully recovered from the virus.
