Daveigh Chase’s Mother Seeks Control of Late Actress’ $400,000 Estate

The mother of late actress Daveigh Chase is seeking to become the administrator of her estate after it was revealed that the Lilo & Stitch voice performer had left behind $400,000.

Chase died in a local hospital on June 16 of complications from AIDS, after spending years living unhoused around downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row area while struggling with drug addiction. According to documents submitted on July 8 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the actor had an estimated $400,000 in personal property at the time of her death but had no will.

Cathy Chase, her mother, has now filed a petition with the court to be appointed administrator of the estate. A probate hearing to determine if this will move forward has been scheduled for Aug. 12 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court documents.

Daveigh Chase was best known for voicing Lilo Pelekai in the 2002 Disney animated hit, as well as the role of Samara Morgan in the horror film The Ring. Her cause of death was listed as AIDS-related complications, with chronic polysubstance use noted as another significant condition.

In June, after her daughter’s death, Cathy Chase told the Daily Mail that a motorcycle accident left her with back pain that she began treating with opioids. This led her down a dark path of drug abuse.

“She was seeking drugs and was partying with the wrong people,” she told the Mail. “I never kicked my daughter out. She wanted freedom, and these people got her hooked on some drugs. That was the beginning.”

Her mother also denied that any estrangement existed between her and Daveigh. But a GoFundMe posted by Roy Hernandez, a man who says he was her boyfriend, paints a different picture, stating she had been diagnosed with meningitis and several serious blood infections.

“Behind the scenes, she’s faced more than her share of hardship,” Hernandez wrote. “After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown L.A.”
