Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed took a swipe at President Trump over a post the president made targeting El-Sayed and his wife.
In a post Saturday on Truth Social, Trump posted a photo of himself and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, and another photo of El-Sayed and his wife. Text above the two photos reads “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s,” and Trump’s name is over the photo of him and the first lady. El-Sayed’s full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, is over the photo of himself and his wife.
CNN’s Jake Tapper asked the Michigan Democrat about the post during an interview on “State of the Union.”
“Yeah, he’s right. One in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other but joint in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you, or two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together, want to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family, and know that that family is going to have the good things.” El-Sayed said, referencing the actions from the post.
“So yes, you’ve got two different visions of America. Donald Trump’s vision is the one you’re living in right now. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries? Do you believe, when you look your kids in the eye, that they’re going to have a better future than you did?” he added.
Trump has a history of using political opponents’ full names, including calling former President Obama “Barack Hussein Obama.” Some have seen the usage of the former president’s full name by Trump as racist.
El-Sayed, a progressive, narrowly defeated moderate Rep. Haley Stevens (D) in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary last week. El-Sayed’s race was possibly this election season’s biggest front in the fight over where the direction of the Democratic Party should go.
The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
