I watched this week as Sen. Rand Paul subpoenaed Dr. Anthony Fauci to testify before a Republican-led Senate committee. From the opening statement, it was clear this wasn’t designed to be a fact-finding hearing. Paul framed one of the world’s most recognizable infectious disease experts as a criminal who deliberately misled the American people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci responded directly in his opening remarks, saying Paul has an obvious obsession with calling for his prosecution.

Now, after Fauci pleaded the Fifth, Paul is doubling down, threatening to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions. But why would he? Rand Paul has spent years making clear that his objective is to put Fauci behind bars.

Republicans want to continue to relitigate COVID, and their determination to prosecute Fauci led them to missing out on what could have been a rare opportunity to honestly examine what went right, what went wrong, and what we should do differently the next time the world faces a pandemic.

Some people, like Joe Scarborough, saw the hearing for what it was:

“The Fauci thing, just sheer political theater. They shamed themselves. We Americans needed answers yesterday. We needed answers on origins of this, the best information they had, the thinking about closing down schools, the thinking about all these other things. If it had been a normal hearing where you didn’t have the chairman of the committee going in saying ‘I’m going to put Anthony Fauci behind bars,’ then, as The Wall Street Journal said, we could have had that open conversation.”

Instead of trying to understand how decisions were made under extraordinary circumstances, or debating which policies should never be repeated, the hearing often felt like it had only one destination: finding a way to prosecute Fauci. Bravo’s Andy Cohen even jumped in the conversation:

“Dr. Anthony Fauci spent over three hours today being grilled, berated, and sworn at by Senate Republicans over the imaginary crimes they want you to believe he committed during his management of the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, this is the same Dr. Fauci who was a devoted public servant for 54 years and led the federal response to the HIV AIDS epidemic as the main architect of PEPFAR. His courageous work is responsible for saving over 26 million lives around the world.”

Cohen argued Congress has far more pressing issues to tackle, and called the hearing “deeply unserious and dangerous.”

But Republicans don’t care; they want to make an example out of Fauci by any means necessary. Check out Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who made that crystal clear during an appearance on Fox News.

“This guy gets weasel of the year award. He will eventually end up either broke or in prison. … I’m going to sue the heck out of this guy. He’s going to court every day of his life for the rest of his life.”

Ironically, Alabama, Tuberville’s home state, experienced one of the nation’s highest COVID death rates, while vaccination rates consistently lagged behind the national average. Public health experts have long noted that messaging from political leaders and trusted community voices can significantly influence immunization rates.

The obsession with Fauci has become bigger than Fauci himself. It’s about settling scores instead of learning lessons.

Even TMZ founder Harvey Levin, who has openly criticized aspects of the government’s COVID response, argued there is a difference between questioning decisions and alleging criminal intent.

“That’s the point of this hearing. That’s why they’re doing this. They want to take something that Anthony Fauci says and then claim that it amounts to some kind of perjury. They want to prosecute him, they want to convict him, they want to throw him in prison. That’s the point of this hearing.”

Levin pointed out that if you can prosecute James Comey for seashells on a seashore, then you can certainly prosecute Fauci for what he says in a congressional hearing, so why would he say anything given the current political climate?
