Emmy Rossum in Hulu's 'Furious' Sarah Shatz/Disney Logo text Hulu is still feeling Furious.
The Disney-owned streamer has renewed Furious, a serial killer thriller starring Emmy Rossum, for a second season. The pickup comes a few days ahead of the first season finale, which debuts Aug. 31.
Loosely based on the 1987 movie Black Widow and created by Elizabeth Meriwether, Furious stars Rossum as Alice Black, an FBI agent who is tracking a serial killer (played by Lola Petticrew). “Both walk their own paths toward justice,” the show’s logline reads, “and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.”

The second season is likely to follow Rossum’s Alice on a new case, though it’s still very early in the development process.
Furious has received strong reviews; The Hollywood Reporter critic Daniel Fienberg wrote that “especially in its home stretch, [the series] becomes a complex, well-acted and even funny thriller about the ongoing toll of trauma, the psychic cost of revenge and the danger of a life driven by anger.” Sources say the show is also likely to appear in Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts for its premiere week; that data is due for release later Thursday.
Season one of Furious also stars Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Scoot McNairy. Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way have recurring roles.
“I love serial killer shows, but I’d never seen one with a female serial killer other than Killing Eve,” Meriwether said on THR’s podcast I’m Having an Episode earlier this month. “I wanted to dive into that character and [Black Widow] seemed like a good framework. This sounds insane, but the more I learned about female serial killers, the more I was drawn in — especially learning that most female serial killers have been victims of violence. That idea began forming in my head, just the cycle of violence and how misunderstood it is when it comes to women.”
The series comes from 20th Television and Searchlight Television. Meriwether (The Dropout, Dying for Sex, New Girl) is the showrunner and executive produces with Rossum (via her Composition 8 banner), Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, Sam Hoffman and Brian Kirk, who also directed the first two episodes.
