Gunna seems to conquer every goal he locks into: music, fashion, “pushing P,” and lately, fitness.
The Atlanta rapper quickly established himself in the music industry with his 2016 mixtape debut, Drip Season. He was on the rise with subsequent projects and singles until encountering a setback in 2023, when he was arrested on a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) indictment and later released after an Alford plea deal. Now, the rapper returned to the public eye, putting out more hits and with a renewed focus on fitness. Scroll his social media and you’ll catch the “Drip Too Hard” rapper showing off his intense workout routine, hosting 5Ks around the country, and sharing fun photos of him and other celebrities like Justin Bieber putting in work together at the gym.
The next step in the wellness journey: Under Armour has named the Grammy-nominated rapper global brand ambassador, as well as the creative director of the brand’s newest P-Star collection. “It just feels like everything is growing; we’re manifesting everything that we said that we would,” Gunna tells Rolling Stone of the Under Armor P-Star collaboration. “It all started with a dream at first.”
Desmond K Ye shop UA x Gunna collaboration The 14-piece collection includes different black and white cuts of fleeces, sports bras, athletic shorts, shoes, and anything anyone would need for a successful workout in the gym. Gunna talks about his new role at Under Armour and reveals some of the gym habits he’s picked up over time.
I know you’ve hosted several 5Ks now, but do you remember the very first time you ever went on a run? Yes. It was challenging, and I didn’t finish, like the whole three miles. I didn’t run it all the way out, but it was like actually like a three-mile run: one and a half one way and one and a half back. It was in Arizona, and it was a trail just in the back of a house that I was renting at the time.
So you started with a 5K. You didn’t try to work your way up? Literally. Without even knowing, in hindsight, that [I’d] be doing 5Ks.
How does it feel now? I mean, you probably run 5Ks as often as you brush your teeth. You know, I have my days.
What is the day-to-day of somebody who’s living a P-Star lifestyle? What does their morning look like? Very disciplined. You probably gonna get up and go to the gym for sure. You know? You gonna put on some P-Star Under Armour. For me it’s a person who just likes to perform on and off the stage, a person that’s motivated.
I’ve heard different musicians who are on their fitness journey talk about the music they listen to in the gym. Some rappers like to listen to jazz or R&B. So what kind of music do you like to turn up in the gym? I like to listen to my unreleased music, the music that I’ve just been creating in the studio. Songs that I might gotta touch up and just hear beats. I like to still be in my workspace while I’m working out.
Are you often taking notes in your head mid-workout? Always.
So there’s new music coming? Of course.
How does it feel to bring Under Armour together with your fashion label, P-Star? It just feels like everything is growing; we’re manifesting everything that we said that we would. It all started with a dream at first.
Desmond K Ye Some of P-Star’s earlier capsules contained jeans and T-shirts. Now you’re moving into the fitness space. I’m actually putting out another capsule collection that’s just P-Star alone soon. It’s still different silhouettes of jeans, sweatsuits, T-shirts. But right now, it’s showing the collaboration and showing both brands come together.
How did you start your personal fitness journey? I started with doing runs to just work on my mental [health and] get some free space to not even think about nothing and just, like, run. And that transition just started me wanting to work out and be more active and move.
Is there anything that you’ve achieved in the gym lately that you’re super proud of? For me, it’s about seeing the definition, the gains, or me cutting back, me getting the back fat out the way. It’s seeing the evolution of working out, like, “You’re seeing a change now.”
Do you ever look at old pictures and feel shocked at your progress? All the time, I’m just like, “Damn, like this was you. This how you look. This is you now.”
On your social media algorithm, do you get a lot of workout videos or fitness advice? Of course, it’s my algorithm now because it’s always room to improve… I think like now my algorithm is just like everything that revolves around me. So working out is definitely popping up.
What’s some of the best fitness advice that you’ve seen on social media? I be seeing posts where they’re saying the right foods, the best proteins. I try to screenshot little stuff.
What’s some of the worst fitness advice you’ve seen on the internet? It be lies on there, too. Like somebody tell you, “Oh, you can eat pizza all you want. Just make sure you go into the gym.” Like, no, you can’t. That’s a lie.
What’s your next fitness goal? I actually wanna create a wellness center, like [where] people could just come and learn other things about health and wellness. That’s something on my to-do list… a space where people could work out, get vitamins, get checked on so you can see your blood type and the foods that you should eat.
What are your top five tracks, of your own, that are good for a run or just good workout motivators, in general? Top five is tough. I would say, like, top five albums, though, because you can really put on my album and just, like, run for real: The Last Wun, A Gift & a Curse, Wun of Wun, Drip Season 4, and Wunna.
That’s a great list of albums. What’s coming for the next era of Gunna? You can expect good music, creative directing, visuals that look like films. You can expect me coming out with my label.
So when is the soonest we can hear or see the new era? I mean, the P-Star Under Armour drops on [Aug.] 27, looking forward to New York Fashion Week, and I’m also gonna be dropping new music then, around that time. So: soon, soon, soon.
