The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is saying some estimates in the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) “Wall of Receipts” are incorrect or lack evidence to support the claims.

The watchdog agency found in a report released Thursday that the estimated $110 billion DOGE saved in government contracts, grants and leases contain “several issues” that “limit the transparency and reliability of these reported savings.”

The “Wall of Receipts” was announced in February 2025, a month after the agency was established. The GAO reported that since it was started “there have been no updates on the site to shed additional light on the cost savings methodology.”

DOGE, which led efforts to dismantle government agencies and cut funding, shut down on July 4. In a post on the social platform X that announced the end to the agency, DOGE said “while the formal mission of DOGE has come to an end, the mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse will continue.”

The DOGE website claims to have saved $1,335.40 per individual taxpayer on a webpage last updated at the beginning of 2026. The “Wall of Receipts” on the website lists dozens of contracts across federal agencies that have been canceled by the agency, which include closing local agency offices and canceling restoration projects.

The GAO said that the list included cancelled contracts that were already planned before DOGE’s establishment. It estimated 108 of the 264 leases that were terminated were already in progress before DOGE’s establishment date.

In February 2025, DOGE initiated the process to cancel roughly 1,125 government contracts, though 37 percent of the terminated contracts were not expected to yield any savings. On the “Wall of Receipts,” various suspended agreements show $0 in proposed savings.

It also reported that DOGE was not transparent in its methodologies for creating the “Wall of Receipts” and the basis for some savings listed were unknown.

The GAO detailed in one example that DOGE claimed to save $1.7 billion for the Defense Health Agency in a contract for IT services at facilities worldwide. The identified contract was sent for termination, but no action was ever taken and “no savings were achieved.”
