Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) was hospitalized on Sunday after being involved in a hit-and-run car crash, according to her office and local authorities.

Kaptur’s office said the congresswoman was a passenger in a vehicle heading to church service when the car was struck. The 80-year-old is “active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” her office added.

“We look forward to additional information from Toledo Police as they investigate the accident,” her office wrote on social platform X. “Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash.

“She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”

Officers from the Toledo Police Department responded at roughly 10:48 a.m. EST to the area of Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue for a “hit-skip” crash, Toledo Police Sgt. Mohamad Nasser told The Hill. Ohio law treats a hit-skip the same as a hit-and-run, with both signifying the failure to stop after an accident.

Two individuals, including Kaptur, were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Nasser added. The sergeant noted the investigation is in its early stages and accident investigators from the police department have responded to the scene.

Kaptur has represented Ohio’s 9th Congressional District since 1983 and is vying for reelection to an 18th term in the lower chamber this November. She is the longest-serving member of the Buckeye State’s 17-member congressional delegation by more than 20 years.

Kaptur is facing off against former state Rep. Derek Merrin (R) in the general election, after she defeated him by just 2,382 in 2024. Merrin said Sunday he was “saddened” to learn of the accident Kaptur was involved in.

“Please join me in praying for her speedy recovery and all those injured in the crash,” Merrin wrote on X.

Ohio Sen. Jon Husted (R) said Sunday he and his wife Tina “are praying for a quick and full recovery” for Kaptur.

“We hope the person responsible for this reckless act is apprehended quickly and held accountable,” Husted wrote on social platform X.

Kaptur’s House colleague, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), also said he was “praying” for his counterpart.

“May she be restored to full health in short order,” Biggs wrote on X.

“Praying for a full and swift recovery for Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, and that law enforcement quickly finds the driver who fled the scene and holds them accountable,” Ohio Rep. Warren Davidson (R) wrote on X.
