Courtesy of CNN Kasie Hunt is known best for her acumen in covering politics, but she is quickly developing an expertise in something that may even be more important to her bosses at CNN: keeping TV-news viewers from jumping away to a second screen.
On most afternoons, the anchor leads conversations on “The Arena,” her late-day program that examines big stories in Washington. At many times, there is also a different kind of on-screen chatter. CNN has for months been experimenting with a “text chain” featuring lines of running commentary from reporters, experts and contributors who are not taking part in the discussions going on in Hunt’s studio. The effect? Viewers see a second conversation that looks a lot like what they might find on their smart phones.
