A judge issued a Monday order requiring the Kennedy Center to pay the legal fees of Chuck Redd, a jazz musician who dropped out of his annual Christmas Eve show last year following President Trump’s overhaul of the performing arts venue.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Tanya Jones Bosier, a Biden appointee, is requiring the Center to pay Redd $252,479.70 to cover the costs of retaining attorneys for the lawsuit launched by the Center.
The performing arts venue has 45 days to issue funds to the jazz musician.
Redd’s attorney Lisa Banks said the fee is “appropriate” and suggested the lawsuit was “politically motivated.”
“The Trump-controlled Kennedy Center tried to silence opposition to its illegal name change by filing a meritless lawsuit,” Banks said in a statement sent to Bloomberg Law.
“The court rightly dismissed that breach of contract lawsuit, finding there was no contract and no damages, and was brought against Mr. Redd based on his protected opposition,” Banks added.
The Center’s case was tossed out of court by Bosier in June after the judge determined that the yearly “Jazz Jam” hosted at the performing arts venue was cancelled due to multiple artists withdrawing, not Redd alone.
Redd had been performing at the event for 19 years, prior to his decision to pull out in 2025.
