Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Wednesday that former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) treated Republicans poorly, recalling that she would sometimes “yell” at GOP lawmakers.

Speaking on Fox News’s “Jesse Watters Primetime” while discussing a graphic comparing how conservatives and liberals perceive one another, McCarthy agreed with the sentiment that most liberals view conservatives as “savages” while most conservatives see liberals as “children.”

“This is where they get the Trump syndrome,” McCarthy said, referencing what President Trump has dubbed “Trump derangement syndrome,” explaining the intense criticism of him on the left.

McCarthy claimed Pelosi “really felt this about us.”

“Like, we shouldn’t be in the room — she would yell at me sometimes,” McCarthy recalled. “And then, they would put magnetometers to try to deny us from entering, and you couldn’t co-author with us.”

Magnetometers, commonly known as metal detectors, became a point of contention in Congress after heightened security measures were in place following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

McCarthy said the atmosphere reflected a broader breakdown in political discourse.

“It was so outrageous that you couldn’t respect the other one, and this is the problem I have, where I think America has failed a little bit when it came to politics,” he said. “We should be able to disagree with somebody without being disrespectful.”

He claimed Republicans generally respected Democrats despite political differences, but he accused Democrats of treating Republicans like “monsters and murderers” over their beliefs.

“The Republicans respected the other side. They just thought you were children. We had hope that they would grow up one day,” he said.

McCarthy’s successor, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), has ramped up his rhetoric toward Democrats as the midterms near, accusing the party of planning a communist takeover following the rising popularity of democratic socialist figures in the party.

“THE BARBARIANS ARE INSIDE THE GATE!” Johnson wrote on social platform X earlier this month. “We are fighting right now in Congress over whether we’re going to maintain our status as a constitutional republic OR trade that in, dismantle the foundations and GO DOWN THIS DARK ROAD OF DEATH TO COMMUNISM.”
