Washington’s 4th Congressional District candidates Amanda McKinney (R) and John Duresky (D) are projected to advance to the November general election in the battle for retiring Rep. Dan Newhouse’s (R) seat, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).

The two beat 11 candidates who sought to replace Newhouse, who in December said he would not seek another term. Newhouse was one of the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.

Newhouse has served in Congress since 2015. He proved to be a formidable opponent for Trump-backed challengers in 2022 and 2024 during both GOP primaries.

McKinney, a Yakima County commissioner, beat a crowded Republican field, having secured President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) endorsements, as well as an endorsement from Turning Point Action, founded by the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“A very successful Business Executive, Civic Leader, and Highly Respected Yakima County Commissioner, Amanda has dedicated her life to serving her Community,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in January. “… Amanda McKinney has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Representative from Washington’s 4th Congressional District — SHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Duresky, a retired Air Force major who served for nearly 40 years, racked up endorsements from the Washington State Labor Council, the Washington Education Association and Track AIPAC, the grassroots organization designed to counter the interests of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

His campaign website describes how Duresky “earned the right to slow down” after decades of public service.

“But watching working families struggle and politics become about power instead of people, sitting on the sidelines stopped feeling like an option,” the website states.

Though McKinney faces a challenge from a Democrat, the Cook Political Report estimates that the 4th Congressional District is solid red for a potential Republican victory.

Newhouse has not endorsed anyone in the race to replace him.
