Michael Mann was hospitalized on Saturday after accidentally shooting himself at a gun range in Los Angeles, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” a rep for the four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker shared in a statement.

The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to The Range LA at around 4 p.m. for a call about shots fired. “Responding units’ investigation determined the shooting to be accidental. The subject was transported to a local hospital in stable condition,” authorities said.

Sources told TMZ that Mann was apparently trying to holster his gun during target practice at a sanctioned gun range when the firearm went off. He was later taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. Mann has been an experienced target shooter for decades.

Mann is currently in pre-production on Heat 2, which reportedly has Leonardo DiCaprio, Stephen Graham and Christian Bale attached to star. The film comes more than three decades after the 1995 crime drama Heat that starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and Jon Voight.

He’s also best known for directing 1981’s Thief, 1999’s The Insider, 2001’s Ali, 2004’s Collateral, 2006’s Miami Vice, 2009’s Public Enemies and 2023’s Ferrari, among others. Throughout his career, he’s received four Academy Award nominations, including best director, best picture and best adapted screenplay for The Insider, and best picture for 2005’s The Aviator.
