Most Americans back stronger social media oversight, according to a new survey.
In the Reuters/Ipsos poll, 61 percent of respondents said that additional government oversight is needed for social media companies, 27 percent were against additional government oversight and 17 percent did not respond or were not sure.
Over half of all Republicans, Democrats and Independents in the poll were for additional oversight, at 62 percent, 71 percent and 52 percent, respectively.
As social media has become more prevalent in Americans’ lives and the U.S. economy, conversations around how it affects personal safety, private information and mental health have also become more common, with social media companies facing controversy and scandal over those issues in the last two decades.
Democrats pulling together a policy blueprint before the 2028 presidential election unveiled a kids online safety proposal in June, urging stronger privacy protections and that social media to be banned for kids under 16.
The proposal “Kids Over Clicks,” released by the Project 2029 group, focuses on the mental and physical health impacts of social media on kids and teens.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey took place from July 29 to Aug. 3, featuring 4,505 people and plus or minus 2 percentage points as its margin of error.
