The NCIS franchise is expanding once more — and bringing a very familiar face back into the fold.

CBS has picked up NCIS: New York for the 2026-27 season. It’s the eighth show in the long-running franchise (or ninth if you include JAG, of which the original NCIS is a spinoff). Like all the other members of the NCIS-verse, the series comes from CBS Studios.

Long-time NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J will return to the franchise, reprising his role as Sam Hanna. Scott Caan will also star as a “roguish agent” who leads the team with Hanna.

Vampire Comedy 'Eternally Yours' Snags CBS Series Order for 2026-27

The network announced the series order Wednesday along with its schedule for the 2026-27 season. “When you’re home to the number one television franchise in the world, you must build on success and keep expanding the universe,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach told reporters at a press event announcing the schedule. “And quite frankly, our fans demand it.”

Another NCIS: LA alum, R. Scott Gemmill — creator of The Pitt — is writing the pilot and will executive produce with Byron Balasco (Kingdom, Without a Trace), who will serve as showrunner, LL Cool J and Jason Barrett.

NCIS: New York is set to air on Tuesdays in the fall, sandwiched between the flagship series and NCIS: Origins. The other current series in the franchise, NCIS: Sydney, will take over for Origins at midseason.

NCIS: New York will be the third series in the franchise on which LL Cool J has been a regular, following Los Angeles and the final season of NCIS: Hawai’i in 2024. He’s also made guest appearances on the original show — and will do so again on April 21 and 28, CBS says.
