New seasons of Netflix hits Black Doves and The Hunting Wives; an Aussie alien comedy from the makers of Bluey; a Julia Garner-led dramatic retelling of the rise and fall of crypto empire FTX; Lee Chang-dong’s critically acclaimed Oscar frontrunner; Philomena Cunk explaining the power of cinema; and football, both real and imagined, with the NFL and Peter Berg’s latest film are just some of the highlights of the new film and TV projects hitting Netflix in November.

Returning for a second season on Nov. 5, is Netflix’s hit series Black Doves. Something of a sexier version of Slow Horses, Black Doves is another spy drama set in London and stars Keira Knightley, Ben Wishaw and the always incredible Sarah Lancashire. The action in season 2 picks up after the event of the first season, with “Helen (Knightley) is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves: the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan), preparing to become Prime Minister, she is walking a more treacherous line than ever.”

Netflix launches arguably its best shot at an Oscar in 2027 on Nov. 6 with Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love. The long-awaited film from the Korean auteur behind the modern classic Burning, Possible Love debuted at the Venice Film Festival this year where it won the Silver Lion. The film has been praised to the high heavens by critics, and currently boasts a whopping 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, 95 on Metacritic and 4.2 on Letterboxd. Hmmm, sounds like a must-see. A logline for the film reads: “A story of two married couples — a laid-off worker and his spouse and a documentary filmmaker and her spouse — crossing paths to film a documentary and facing their different lives and hidden desires.”

A potential palate cleanser to the highbrow filmmaking of Possible Love is Jeffrey Walker’s Allen that debuts on Nov. 12. An Australian original film, Allen tells the story of a man wistfully longing for the return of the alien he met as a child, and his life turned upside down when he returns. The comedy feature comes from Ludo Studio (yes, the people behind Bluey!) so the Aussie creative team leans into the silly humor.

On Nov. 15, Philomena Cunk is back with more musings on how the world works. This time, our intrepid Philomena takes on the topic of the movies, in Cunk on Cinema. In six episodes, Cunk traces the history of the moving image and its impact on society and culture. Along the way, the grills the likes of Michael Bay and Benedict Cumberbatch, so much so they are left flummoxed. Diane Morgan returns of Cunk and the series is written by Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker. Watch it! You won’t regret it.

On Nov. 18, Netflix unveils its big, potentially discourse-shaping, limited series The Altruists. The latest tech-bros-suck project to hit the timeline, the eight-episode gets inside the rise and spectacular falls of the founders of crypto empire FTX. The series synopsis reads: “The story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye – before they were accused of stealing $8 billion and became Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde.” Emmy-winner Julia Garner plays Caroline and Anthony Boyle plays Sam. The show is created, written and showrun by Oscar-winner Graham Moore.

Netflix’s big Hollywood movie release for November is Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl, which debuts on a big day for football on the streamer. Launching on Nov. 25th, the film is based on Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II about the legendary bowl game. The synopsis reads: “Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, four of America’s top college football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they’ll play in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history — a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.” The film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis. The film is something of a Friday Night Lights reunion with the involvement of Berg, Bissinger, producer Brian Grazer and the music provided by Explosions in the Sky.

It’s the big one on Nov. 25. NFL Netflix Gameday: Thanksgiving Eve will see the Packers play the Rams at the SoFi Stadium and it will be NFL’s first-ever Thanksgiving Eve matchup. Netflix and the league are taking this one really seriously and are looking to establish it as a key date in the TV calendar, so they’ve pushed the boat out and hired U2 to provide the halftime entertainment.

And finally, Nov. 26 will see the return of the ludicrously entertaining series, The Hunting Wives. Malin Akerman’s Margo and Brittany Snow’s Sophie are back and up to no good once more, but at the start of season 2 “Sophie and Margo are on the outs. But soon enough, old secrets and new foes force them back together. As they play their dangerous games, the question arises. Are they the hunters or the hunted?” The show has been a huge hit for Netflix and has already been renewed for a third season.

Movies added to Netflix in November include A Sudden Case of Christmas, Air Force One, Barbie in the Nutcracker, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Bridesmaids, Cliffhanger, The Croods, The Day After Tomorrow, Fury, Ghosting: The Spirit of Christmas, Insidious: Chapter 2, Smile, Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 3, Looper, The Mummy, No Sleep ‘Til Christmas, Public Enemies, Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Richard Jewell, Same Time, Next Christmas, Stand by Me, Weekend at Bernie’s, Misty Green, Pressure, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Whiplash.
