Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband is facing possible misdemeanor charges after he was involved in a hit-and-run in California on Friday that left a car with “major” damage, according to multiple reports.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press that Paul Pelosi, 86, was driving his brown convertible in Yountville, Calif., when he struck a car that parked legally on the side of the road.
He reportedly briefly stopped before driving away. No injuries were reported.
The AP reported that a witness reported the crash to 911, and sheriff’s deputies located Pelosi shortly afterward about a quarter mile down the road with damage to the front of his car. He told officers that he knew he had hit something but was unsure when or what.
Pelosi had no alcohol in his system and was referred to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a process to determine whether he may continue to drive, according to the AP, which noted that is common for older drivers.
He was not arrested, and the sheriff’s office reportedly recommended that he be charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor crime.
“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle,” a spokesperson for the Pelosi family said in a statement on Saturday. “Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter.”
Paul Pelosi was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation in August 2022 after pleading guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges following a late-night crash in Napa County that injured another driver.
The AP reported that Pelosi served only two days in jail after receiving credit for good conduct and then served one day in a work program at the courthouse.
Later that year, a man broke into the couple’s San Francisco home and violently attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer. The attacker, David DePape, is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole on state charges in connection with the assault.
