Former Vice President Mike Pence said Monday that he thinks this year’s midterm elections will deeply affect the fate of the U.S.

In an interview on WABC’s “Cats & Cosby” radio show, Pence said that he believed “this upcoming election couldn’t be more important in the life of the nation.”

“I tell people. I also think, in some respects, I argue a little bit with some of the direction of the Republican Party, nationalizing businesses, price controls, some people dallying with isolationism. But I tell people, in some respects, I think Republicans have lost their way, but Democrats have lost their minds,” the former vice president added later.

Pence also praised the current Trump administration, saying that “there’s much to be commended, and you compare that with the [Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA)] agenda that’s overtaking the Democratic Party.”

“I remember when I served in the House of Representatives, Bernie Sanders was actually in the House at that time, John, and he wasn’t listed as a Democrat,” Pence told host John Catsimatidis, referencing the democratic socialist senator from Vermont.

Democratic socialist and progressive candidates have seen success in Democratic primaries this year across the country, and figures like New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have seen their star rise on the national stage in the last year.

The success has led to renewed tensions between progressives and centrists on the direction of the party.

Left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, a notable supporter of progressive and democratic socialist candidates, in a recent interview slammed the idea that progressive candidates pose a risk to Democrats in general elections.

A number of establishment Democrats have pointed to polls that suggest the progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed would fare worse in a general election for the Senate against former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) than Rep. Haylee Stevens. El-Sayed and Stevens are battling in a Democratic primary.
