Perez Hilton‘s children were inside the home moments before the celebrity gossip blogger started his disturbing livestream, his family has revealed.

In a new statement shared on Hilton’s website Thursday, his family wrote, “The events of the past several days have been nearly unbearable for our family. Just minutes before the public livestream incident, Perez’s children, niece, and sister were inside the home. When it became clear that Perez was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they immediately fled to protect the children from witnessing any further trauma.”

“Our highest priority right now is helping the children begin to heal from what they experienced. An important part of that process is allowing them to safely return home and begin rebuilding a sense of security and normalcy,” the statement continued. “For the children’s safety, privacy, and well-being, we respectfully ask members of the media, paparazzi, content creators, and the public to leave the area surrounding the family’s home and not return. Please allow his children the privacy and space they need during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Hilton is a single father of three children — a 13-year-old son, 11-year-old daughter and another 8-year-old daughter — who were born via gestational surrogacy.

On the night of Aug. 4, deputies initially responded to his home after the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office said it had received “multiple calls regarding an individual who was livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media.” Graphic clips from Hilton’s livestream were being reposted on social media, where he could be seen covered in blood, using an object to cut himself repeatedly.

After arriving at the scene and determining Hilton was home alone, authorities “tactically disengaged while continuing to monitor the situation” at first, the sheriff’s office told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

Deputies later shared that the individual was “safely recovered” and taken to a local hospital to receive medical attention.

THR also later learned from TikTok’s U.S. spokesperson that Hilton’s social media account has been taken down from the platform.

Hilton rose to fame in the early 2000s after launching a controversial yet highly addictive celebrity gossip blog, PerezHilton.com, where he would publish rapid-fire posts about celebrity gossip, paparazzi photos and headline-making news, while also offering snarky and unfiltered commentary.

Following the Tuesday night incident, Hilton’s team and family initially shared in a statement on his website the following day that their “focus right now is on his well-being.”

“Many of you have reached out with concern for Perez, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers,” the initial statement continued. “We kindly ask that you respect Perez’s privacy, as well as the privacy of his family, during this difficult time. If and when we are able to share any updates, we will do so with everyone as soon as we can. Thank you for your compassion, understanding, and continued support.”
