A record number of respondents in a new poll say they think President Trump is not paying enough attention to the most important problems Americans face daily.
CNN’s latest survey, released Wednesday, found that 73 percent of Americans accuse Trump of not prioritizing the top issues facing the country. Just over a quarter of Americans said he’s had the right priorities.
Majorities of Americans say Trump’s economic and military policies have worsened conditions, at 65 and 67 percent, respectively. Only 22 percent of Americans say the economy has improved based on his policies, and 21 percent say his military actions in Iran have helped the U.S., according to the poll.
The data also shows an increasing number of U.S. adults believe Trump lacks a strategy for the Iran war, at 74 percent. Only 67 percent of Americans previously said he had no plan for Iran, according to a similar CNN poll taken in March.
Americans also have unfavorable views toward the president’s handling of the economy and high prices. Three-quarters of respondents in the survey said they are unhappy with rising inflation, and 79 percent do not approve of his handling of gas prices, which have increased over the past six months due to the U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran.
The latest polling also showed the president’s overall approval rating matching his low ratings following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, coming in at 34 percent. Around 50 percent of Americans say they strongly disapprove of his policies while 15 percent say they strongly approve, both a record high and a record low.
Trump’s approval rating matches the same numbers released by The Economist/YouGov, which also found that 62 percent say they either “strongly” or “somewhat” do not back his job performance.
The president has faced bipartisan backlash for both his handling of the Iran war, jointly launched with Israel in late February, and for dragging out inflation. U.S. adults largely say they are feeling the war’s effects on the economy, with 2 in 3 Americans telling Gallup recently that they have experienced financial hardship from high gas prices.
Trump has acknowledged the war’s impact on the economy, though he has said that he does not think about Americans’ financial situations when making decisions in the Middle East conflict.
“I don’t think about Americans’ financial situations,” he told reporters in May. “I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”
The CNN survey was conducted July 23-27 and included 1,225 respondents. The margin of error is 3.2 percentage points.
