Former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) has a lead over Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and is falling behind Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) in the race for Sen. Gary Peters’s (D-Mich.) seat, per a new poll.
In the EPIC-MRA poll, 44 percent of respondents said they would cast their ballot for Stevens or would consider doing so if the election happened that day, and 42 percent said the same of Rogers. Fourteen percent were not sure about their preferred candidate or did not give a response.
In contrast, 46 percent of respondents said they would back or were considering backing Rogers, while 43 percent said the same of El-Sayed.
The margin of error for the poll is 4 percentage points, so the results for both Democratic candidates against Rogers are within that margin.
El-Sayed, a physician and progressive activist, is competing against Stevens for a seat being vacated by Peters, who is retiring. During the race, El-Sayed has leaned into messaging focused on economic populism, universal healthcare and restricting corporate influence in politics.
The physician is also one of many progressive-leaning candidates who have seen their political stars rise as they have taken on more establishment figures in recent primaries.
Whoever wins the Democratic primary this Tuesday will probably face a tough battle for Peters’s seat, with President Trump beating former Vice President Kamala Harris in Michigan in the 2024 presidential election.
Rogers has locked down an endorsement from Trump, who called the former House Republican an “America First Patriot.”
The EPIC-MRA poll took place from July 24 to July 31 and featured 600 likely Michigan general election voters.
