Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he “hated” a photo of him in the Oval Office that became a viral meme after the blowout meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last year.
“Well, the meme thing, you know, was interesting because when it first came out, I hated that picture, you know, because what happened is in that couch, if you don’t have a pillow behind your back, you kind of sink,” Rubio said during an interview on Fox News’s “My View with Lara Trump” that aired Saturday.
“So I looked at the pictures, I was like, this is terrible. I look, you know, like whatever. And then it turned into this other thing, and it was fine and it’s funny. I don’t really follow it very closely, but people have shown me pictures out there,” he added.
The photo of Rubio is frequently used as a meme in response to when President Trump assigns him another role within his second administration.
The secretary of State serves as interim national security adviser and also previously provided oversight as acting head of the United States Agency for International Development in 2025.
“We have a good friend here that works at the White House, Dan Scavino, made a nice board for me,” Rubio said.
“And even since he made that board, we had to update it. So of all the different pictures, so that stuff is funny,” he added.
Rubio’s various assignments have driven speculation about a 2028 presidential bid, particularly given his outsized role in many of the Trump administration’s top priorities, such as the war in Iran and peace talks with Russia and Ukraine.
During the Fox News segment, Lara Trump asked Rubio about his time in politics and how he has changed over the years.
“I think everybody, you know, you go through life, right? And you go through life, you learn new things, you see things you hadn’t seen before, you hear things you haven’t heard before. Certainly, I’m a different person at 55 than I was at 25 or even 35, because I have 20 and 30 years of experience in between in life and in work that inform that,” Rubio said.
“I think at your core, you always want to remain the same person, right? And that is what are your priorities in life and what are the values that sort of drive you to do what you do? And I hope that hasn’t changed,” he added.
The secretary of State continued, “And by the way, the world changes, too. There are things that are true today that weren’t true 10 years ago. So, you know, I think that that’s true for all of us, not just me.”
