Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) previewed his Wednesday meeting with President Trump and the Senate Republican Steering Committee noting the topic of “election security” would be discussed after urging GOP colleagues to hold votes on the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.

The Florida Republican authored a letter Monday in support of the bill’s proposal to require individuals to show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

Scott said the Senate could pass “portions” of the measure pertaining to the citizenship requirement.

The Wednesday meeting with the president will likely focus on how to ensure the Republican caucus is on the same page regarding the SAVE America Act’s approval.

Trump has pushed lawmakers in the upper chamber to pass the SAVE America Act before midterm elections, urging congressional Republicans to attach the bill to several other pieces of legislation in an attempt to thwart the filibuster rule.

As a last-ditch effort, Trump has directed Senate Republicans to end the filibuster to pass the bill, but that proposal has been met with bipartisan objections.

“We support what the President’s done. We’re proud of what he’s done. We’ve got midterms coming up. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Scott said during a Tuesday appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill.”

“Their Democrats want to shut down the government. We’re gonna do everything we can to secure our elections. We’ve got a lot of things we can do to get the cost of living down, and we’ve got to work together with the President to get this done. And that’s what we’re going to have a conversation about tomorrow,” he added.

“It’s going to be a great lunch,” Scott continued.

The lawmaker’s remarks come after the House passed the SAVE America Act in February, but the measure has stalled in the upper chamber due to some Senate Republicans’ unwillingness to change the filibuster rules to bypass the 60-vote threshold to get the measure through.

Scott noted the difficulty in passing the SAVE America Act in his letter, writing that Senate Republicans are “not united in eliminating the filibuster” to pass GOP priorities.

“President Trump has stated time and again the importance of election security,” the GOP senator added. “He thinks it is the most important issue that we need to tackle before the November elections.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) also said Tuesday his conference “should be doing everything we can” to pass the voting bill.

“Cancel recess. Nuke the filibuster. WHATEVER IT TAKES,” Tuberville wrote on social platform X. The Senate will break on Friday for a two-week recess ahead of July 4 and will then go on a two-week recess starting Aug. 8.

Sen. Scott also called for votes on a clean continuing resolution to fund the government until after the midterms, Sen. Ron Johnson’s (R-Wisc.) bill proposing that all federal employees receive pay during government shutdowns and bills to crack down on fraud, reduce government waste, cut federal spending, and cut taxes.

By holding those votes, Republicans will “make a clear distinction as to who the good guys are and who the bad guys are,” Scott said, referring to Senate Democrats.

“We need to show voters that we are listening to them and will fight for their priorities whether any Democrats vote with us or not.”
