The Senate unanimously agreed Wednesday that Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex offender and collaborator of Jeffrey Epstein, should not be allowed a presidential pardon or clemency of any kind.
The resolution was brought by Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), who said it was to prevent acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, whom President Trump nominated to stay in the role, from giving Maxwell a pardon in exchange for clearing Trump’s name. Trump has denied any wrongdoing connected to Epstein.
“It’s frankly horrifying that Trump would entertain the idea of clemency for even a second for a convicted sex trafficker,” Rosen said in a speech on the Senate floor.
Rosen then asked for unanimous consent for her resolution, and it received no opposition on the floor, meaning the Senate officially agreed to it.
“If Republicans advance Todd Blanche’s nomination tomorrow in the Judiciary Committee, this is the least they can do to make their opposition to a Maxwell pardon clear,” she said.
The resolution is not binding. But it sends a message to the Trump administration and the public that Senate Republicans and Democrats alike oppose any kind of clemency for Maxwell, who has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison over her facilitation of Epstein’s crimes.
It also reflects Democrats’ desire to hold Blanche accountable for his handling of the Epstein files as deputy attorney general.
Blanche has said he will not recommend a pardon for Maxwell, but Trump has not ruled it out, and Maxwell’s lawyer has said she will continue seeking clemency.
Blanche interviewed Maxwell for two days last summer, producing written testimony in which Maxwell said she had never seen Trump engage in improper conduct. Shortly afterward, Maxwell was moved to a lower-security prison facility. Blanche has defended that move.
