Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), who is running as a Democratic candidate for Senate in the Great Lakes State, on Sunday denied that President Trump’s actions in Iran were the result of Israeli influence.
“Donald Trump is gonna do what Donald Trump does. And I think it’s a fool’s run to place blame on him supposedly being dictated by others,” Stevens said during an appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.”
“What is clear is that Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, have failed in the goal of long-term peace. They have both failed,” she added.
The U.S. has resumed strikes on Iran, marking a return to war, amid efforts to subdue the conflict.
Some, including Vice President Vance, have said that members of the Israeli government are a part of a concerted effort to ensure the war drags on indefinitely. Trump says he was not drawn into war by Israel in any capacity.
However, the clash in the Middle East remains a hot topic for campaigns in the U.S.
“I think that many in America are looking forward, and I know in Michigan, are looking forward to the end of the Trump-Netanyahu era…I believe in a two-state solution,” Stevens told host Chris Stirewalt.
“He equivocates around Israel’s right to exist. He pushes a one-state solution between the longstanding conflict. And I am pushing for a permanent and lasting ceasefire. And I wanna see dignity for Palestinian people, innocent Palestinian people,” the Michigan lawmaker added.
Stevens has been hammered by her opponent, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, for ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobbying group.
“Haley Stevens is a suit with a large AIPAC bank account, that’s it. I hope maybe they find some way to teach her how to string together two coherent sentences,” El-Sayed said in a previous interview with Semafor.
“I guess, at some point, when you sell out for that many corporations and special interests, I guess you forget how to think for yourself,” he added.
On Sunday, Stevens seemingly clapped back at El-Sayed.
“I want to see a two-state solution. My opponent in my Democratic primary here in Michigan, he cannot say that,” Stevens said.
The far-left wing of the party has been debating how to handle relations with Israel following the Israel-Hamas war.
On Wednesday, House Democrats were split on an amendment to cut off U.S. aid to Israel.
The measure ultimately failed in a vote of 104-314-10, with 103 Democrats voting in favor, 98 Democrats voting against, and 10 voting present on the matter, marking a notable shift on the party’s collective commitment to maintain a strong relationship with Israel
Stevens voted against the amendment.
