(NewsNation) — Tony Romo may be taking a break from broadcasting this upcoming NFL season following his arrest last week in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.
CBS has broken its silence on the situation, issuing a statement Friday that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is “on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice.”
Romo, 46, was arrested July 23 for failing multiple sobriety tests after he was pulled over in Milwaukee, according to widely viewed body camera footage from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office. His court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.
CBS said former linebacker JJ Watt will join CBS Sports’ lead NFL team with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson in Romo’s absence and confirmed that it will “release the remainder of our NFL ON CBS roster at a later date.”
Romo joined CBS Sports in 2017 as the top NFL analyst following a 14-year career with the Cowboys. The Wisconsin native was in the state for an amateur golf tournament at the time of his arrest.
Romo went to high school about 35 miles from Milwaukee in Burlington, Wis.
He has been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017 after making four Pro Bowl appearances during an NFL career that ran from 2004-16 and was spent entirely with Dallas.
Watt joined CBS in 2023. He was an analyst on “The NFL Today” for two seasons before teaming with Ian Eagle on the network’s No. 2 crew beginning last season.
