President Trump slammed democratic socialist candidates Monday, calling their movement more dangerous to the U.S. than previous world wars and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
“They use the word social democrat because it sounds so nice, but it’s really communism you’re talking about,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
“I think it’s the biggest threat to our nation there is, maybe since our founding,” he said. “That includes World War I, World War II, September 11, it includes the Pearl Harbor attack.”
The president has repeatedly warned of democratic socialist candidates winning elections since New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) took office earlier this year.
He reupped those warnings after Mamdani-backed candidates won a trio of New York House primaries, telling the crowd at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual policy conference in Washington on Friday that the Democratic Party “is in trouble because this isn’t stopping with New York.”
“It’s too easy to get elected, giving everything away,” he continued. “It’s easy for them to get followers because they make promises they know they can’t keep.”
Candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America have sprung up in primaries across the country, including in Los Angeles, Colorado, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
Trump attacked D.C. mayor nominee Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist, in a Truth Social post Sunday, calling her a “communist” and saying he will push back against her policies.
Trump said she wants to “empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things.’”
“In the end, it will never work out, nor will I let it even have a chance because I have worked too hard to Washington, D.C., the Envy of the World,” he said, adding that he will still meet with her if she wins the mayoral election.
