President Trump late Tuesday renewed his call on Senate Republicans to adopt a House-passed budget resolution before the upcoming recess that would pave the way for passing a $95 billion emergency funding package with a simple-majority vote in September.
The package would include $73 billion to help fund the Iran war effort, $12 billion for farmers and $10 billion in incentives to states to reform election procedures.
“Senator Ron Johnson is working hard with Senate Republican Leadership to adopt a Budget Resolution before the August recess. This is the first step towards getting as much of THE SAVE AMERICA ACT as possible in a Budget Bill, funding our Troops, and helping our Farmers,” Trump posted on Truth Social, referring to Senate Budget Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).
“I am calling on the Senate to get this critical first step done before the August recess. This Resolution can be adopted at a simple Majority threshold. GET IT DONE!” Trump wrote.
Trump is ramping up the pressure on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to adopt a House-passed budget framework before the Senate leaves Washington for a five-week recess despite Thune’s warning that he doesn’t see 50 votes for advancing the package.
“As I’ve said before you got to get to 50, and I can’t count to 50 right now on a budget resolution,” Thune said last week.
Passage of the budget resolution, which unlocks the reconciliation process that allows Republicans to circumvent a Democratic filibuster, is complicated by the absence of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who is recuperating at a rehab facility after suffering a fall at his home last month.
McConnell hasn’t voted since June 11, effectively shrinking the Senate GOP majority to 52 seats until he returns.
The Senate has a packed schedule for the rest of this week and next week before the scheduled break.
Senators plan to wrap up action on a Russia sanctions bill this week before moving to a continuing resolution to fund the government until Dec. 4 in hopes of avoiding another shutdown.
Thune also wants to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general and Keith Sonderling as secretary of Labor. In addition, he plans to move a package of 74 Trump nominees, which will require passage of a resolution before passage of the bloc of nominees itself.
