President Trump in an interview aired early Friday appeared to deflect blame for the anger among the Republican base toward the party’s leadership in Congress, saying in an interview published early Friday GOP voters are not “angry” with his job as president.
“They’re angry at Republicans but they’re not angry at me,” Trump told Punchbowl News.
Trump said the question for Republicans ahead of the midterms is if the party’s base will turn out to vote in November when he is not at the top of the ballot.
“That’s the one thing I can’t tell [you]. I’m going to ask them to,” the president continued.
“The question is will they vote because a lot of them are very angry at Republicans,” he said.
A slew of recent polls show Trump with low approval ratings, which could threaten Republicans running in midterm races.
A Quinnipiac University poll released last week found that only 32 percent of all registered voters said they support how Trump has handled his second term in office.
A separate CNN survey released last week showed Democrats leading Republicans on the generic ballot by 8 points. The Decision Desk HQ polling average currently has Democrats leading Republicans by just over 6 points.
While Trump has recently clashed with some Republicans on Capitol Hill, particularly in the Senate, the president has recently hit the campaign trail to bolster GOP enthusiasm ahead of the midterms.
Trump rallied supporters at an event highlighting the “No Taxes on Tips” provision of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
