President Trump stopped in the United Kingdom on Wednesday to transfer from the old Air Force 1 to the newer Qatari vessel for his last leg of the trip home from the NATO summit in Turkey.
Iran warned that it has “no red lines” when it comes to its defense, leading some to speculate that the president flew out of Turkey on the old Air Force One out of safety precautions amid the Iran war.
When asked if he was aware of any credible threats from Iran causing a shift in plans, Trump said “I have a threat all the time. I’m number one on their list, before you,” in remarks to CNN’s White House correspondent Alayna Treene.
“But if I go, you go, right? Perhaps someday you want to change professions,” he added.
The new Air Force One is a modified Boeing 747-8 and is an interim, Qatari-gifted luxury jet that doesn’t have the ability to refuel in midair and lacks the advanced missile detection and countermeasure systems of the legacy Air Force 1.
When reporters asked why they were told to put their blinds down on the flight, the president said it was “because you’re probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleazebags that we have to deal with.”
Tehran is 1,040 miles from Ankara, where the summit was held, via plane.
Iranian missiles can travel from about 185 miles (300 kilometers) up to 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) through the air.
The U.S. resumed its strikes across Iran on Tuesday after it attacked three vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for international oil shipping routes.
Trump said the new vessel was temporarily on display for soldiers in Europe to admire its features. He later picked up the Qatari plane at Mildenhall Air Force Base in Holywell Row, England.
