Muhammad won nine consecutive fights before being give a shot at Edwards and the title. That night, he fought brilliantly and won a clear unanimous decision to grab the title. Muhammad's reign was shortlived, as he was outworked by Jack Della Maddalena in his first title defense. After dropping the belt, Muhammad lost again, this time by decision to Ian Machado Garry.
