The U.S. military launched a new round of strikes against Iran on Monday, hours after President Trump announced the U.S. Navy would reinstate the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

The fresh strikes, which kicked off at 4:45 p.m. EDT at Trump’s direction, mark the third consecutive day of U.S. attacks against Iran.

“These strikes will continue imposing a heavy cost on Iranian forces and degrade their ability to attack innocent civilians and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” the U.S. Central Command (Centcom), which oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East, said in a statement

Last week, the U.S. military conducted four separate rounds of strikes against Iran in what U.S. officials characterized as retaliation for Iran’s targeting of commercial vessels attempting to transit the waterway, through which around 20 percent of the world’s gas and oil travel.

The U.S. forces struck Iranian military air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities and small boats on Sunday, using fighter jets, Navy vessels, one-way attack aerial drones and for the first time, one-way attack sea drones, according to Centcom.

Earlier on Monday, Trump said the U.S. is bringing back the naval blockade, which was lifted on June 18, and the U.S. will be “reimbursed” 20 percent on all cargo shipped through the strait “as a matter of FAIRNESS.”

“All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait,” the president said, adding that the U.S. will be known as “the Guardian of the Hormuz Strait.”

Trump said during his Monday appearance on the “Hugh Hewitt” radio show that the U.S. military will “take out” Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain, a deeply buried nuclear facility about one mile south of the Natanz uranium enrichment site.

Trump formally notified Congress last week that the U.S. has resumed military strikes against Iran, giving the Pentagon another 60 days to utilize U.S. forces in the Centcom region without congressional approval.
