Vice President JD Vance said he was “not at all concerned” that President Trump will make him the fall guy if the Iran deal fails.

“No, not at all,” Vance told reporters in the White House press briefing, when asked if he was worried Trump would make him the fall guy.

“I think the president was joking as he often does,” he said.

Trump joked on stage at G7 summit on Wednesday that Vance, the lead negotiator with Tehran, would take the blame if the deal falls through.

“If it works out, I’m going to take the credit. If it doesn’t work out, I’m blaming JD. You better be careful, JD. He’s going to turn his plane around and get the hell out of here,” he said.

Vance has become the administration’s face of the Iran deal, taking part in numerous media interviews to sell the deal, which coincided with his book tour this week.

His comments come after Trump signed the preliminary agreement between the U.S. and Iran on Wednesday in France.

The vice president led the U.S. delegation to Islamabad for talks with the Iranians in April. He is slated to travel to Lucerne for the first round of talks with Iran after the memorandum was signed, as the U.S. and Iran enter a 60-day window to negotiate a nuclear deal.
