The deadline is approaching for Ohio GOP officials to replace Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) if he ends his reelection campaign amid allegations of abuse levied by his ex-wife.
If Miller drops out by the close of business Tuesday, local officials must hold a special primary for a candidate to take his place as the Republican nominee in the Buckeye State’s 7th Congressional District, according to state law.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) would designate the date of the special election, as well as the deadline to file a declaration of candidacy or declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate.
On Monday, LaRose told Ohio Public Radio’s Sarah Donaldson his office is “ready to react to whatever any candidate decides to do until” Tuesday’s deadline.
If Miller withdraws after Tuesday but by the close of business next Monday, the county party chairs in his district — which includes all of Medina and Wayne counties and parts of Cuyahoga and Holmes counties — would choose a replacement candidate at a meeting, in accordance with state law.
Officials from the most populous county in the district, in this case Cuyahoga County, must provide two days’ notice of the meeting to select Miller’s replacement.
Miller, though, said Sunday he plans on continuing his bid for a third term in the upper chamber — despite his ex-wife accusing him of throwing hot water on her, holding a gun to her head and breaking their 2-year-old daughter’s collarbone during custody proceedings, allegations Miller has denied.
“This election is just more about winning a seat in November for the Republican Party,” Miller said in a video he posted Sunday to social media. “This election, to me, is about my family and about our daughter and keeping our values here and holding the media and other individuals accountable who have been incredibly reckless.”
He later added, “I’m not getting out of this race, and I’m winning in November.”
The Ohio Republican also claimed his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, has “struggled with significant mental health challenges” and is fabricating the allegations.
Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno (R), the father of Emily Moreno, called on his congressional colleague to resign on Sunday.
“As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help,” the Ohio senator wrote on social platform X. “He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter.
“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives.”
President Trump, whom Miller worked for during his first administration, called the congressman “a good person” on Monday and said he is “going to let the families” resolve the situation.
“It’s a very sad thing, especially when you know somebody so well, to be going through that,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “But it’s accusations.”
