Masked demonstrators were seen marching through Washington, D.C.’s Eastern Market neighborhood on Saturday as the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary of independence.
Dressed in khakis, white face coverings, sunglasses, and caps bearing the logo of white supremacist group Patriot Front, the members were seen gathering near Union Station and marching through Capitol Hill, according to WTOP.
They carried several flags: American, Confederate and flags with Patriot Front’s insignia. Some were seen carrying upside-down American flags.
Videos posted on social media showed the marchers chanting, “Life, liberty, victory!” and “Reclaim America!” as they proceeded through the city. They were also photographed riding Washington’s Metro system, as seen in photos published by Reuters.
When reached for comment, a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) official told The Hill that MPD is tracking what it described as “First Amendment activities” that occurred Saturday morning in Washington, D.C.’s Eastern Market neighborhood.
“MPD recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views and remains committed to maintaining public safety and security for DC residents and visitors,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The demonstration drew opposition and counter-protestors. In a video circulating online, a man using a bullhorn shouted, “Every single one of you justifies the f-ing right to abortion,” at the group as it marched through the nation’s capital.
Patriot Front was founded in 2017 by Thomas Rousseau, who reportedly led the July 4 protest. It formed in the aftermath of the deadly Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, Va.
The group describes itself as a “fraternal, nationalist, activist organization,” according to its website. “Our people, born to this nation of our European race, must reforge themselves as a new collective capable of asserting our right to cultural independence.”
Its members were last seen protesting in Virginia Beach over Memorial Day weekend, 13News Now reported.
