Sam Walters has received a seven-match ban following his red card late in Wigan Warriors' Challenge Cup final win over Hull Kingston Rovers.

The Cherry and Whites forward became the first man since 1993 to be dismissed in the showpiece after his lift tackle on Robins hooker Bill Leyland was deemed dangerous.

Walters' suspension comes less than two months after he was handed a three-match ban and 18 penalty points for a headbutting offence during Wigan's quarter-final win over Wakefield Trinity.

Serving that ban reduced the number of penalty points to 4.5 but the Rugby Football League match review panel has imposed a 35-point penalty for the dangerous tackle on Leyland as well as fining Walters an unspecified amount.

Warriors half-back Harry Smith has also landed a one-match suspension for making head contact with Robins winger Tom Davies.
