(NewsNation) — WNBA star Brittney Griner and wife Cherelle Griner are ending their eight-year marriage.

The former Atlanta Dream player filed for divorce from her wife in Georgia’s Fulton County on Thursday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Griners, who have been married since 2018, share a 2-year-old son.

In court documents, which show the date of separation as July 24, Brittney Griner said their marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

In February 2022, Brittany Griner was arrested and imprisoned in Russia after authorities found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.

She was charged with smuggling “narcotic drugs” into Russia and was sentenced to nine years inside a Russian penal colony.

Cherelle, an attorney, advocated for her wife’s release during her detention.

The WNBA All-Star was released from prison as part of a U.S.-Russia prisoner swap in December 2022.
