Lottie Woad was denied her third LPGA title as Miyu Yamashita fired a final-round 64 at the Meijer LPGA Classic before winning on the first play-off hole.
England's Woad trailed overnight leader Jing Yan by one stroke and produced a four-under 68 at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan, on Sunday.
Woad, who claimed her second LPGA win last month, nearly secured a memorable win after the 22-year-old holed out for birdie from the sand at the par-four 17th.
That moved the world number seven clear on 18 under but a four-foot putt for victory on the final hole lipped out and she had to settle for a bogey and a play-off.
Japanese rival Yamashita had begun the day five strokes off the lead and birdied five of her first seven holes to close the gap before ending the day level with Woad on 17 under.
The pair replayed the par-five 18th, with 24-year-old Yamashita getting closer to the pin on the third shot.
Last year's Women's Open champion, currently ranked the world number eight, then rolled in a birdie putt for her third LPGA title.
