Buena Vista Social Club will play its final performance Jan. 17 after close to two years on Broadway.

The musical, inspired by the titular Cuban band, took home five Tony Awards in 2025, including a special Tony for its onstage band. While the show is closing in January, producers say it is on track to recoup before closure, making it the second musical of the 2024-2025 to announce recoupment.

The show also has a touring production, and currently has productions in Puerto Rico and Mexico City. In 2027, the musical will open in London’s West End.

Buena Vista Social Club is the first show on Broadway to feature a score sung entirely in Spanish. The story is based on the creation of the Buena Vista Social Club’s 1997 album, which was made up of legends in the 1950s Cuban music scene and toggles between the creation of the album and the past.

The musical opened on March 19, 2025, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, after starting previews in February 2025. The musical is still commanding high attendance, though its grosses have gradually fallen from the highs of 2025. It is the second musical of its season to recoup, following Just In Time, which is still running.

The show features a book by Marco Ramirez, direction by Saheem Ali and choreography by Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck.

“From our very first trip to Cuba to meet the musicians who created this masterpiece, I knew we had something truly special, something to cherish. I am in awe of what Marco R., Saheem, Patricia, Justin, David, Marco P. and Dean have created artistically, bringing this extraordinary music to life on stage and presenting the first Broadway score performed exclusively in Spanish, said lead producer Orin Wolf. “I am deeply grateful for the time we’ve had on Broadway – and the speed with which the team has created three more productions. We are thrilled the Broadway production is on schedule to recoup as we look ahead to an exciting tour, special engagements in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the film and so much more.”

In addition to the onstage band, the cast of Buena Vista Social Club currently includes Gina Torres (Omara), Rick Negron (Compay), Mel Semé (Ibrahim), Jainardo Batista Sterling (Rubén), Isa Antonetti (Young Omara), Da’Von T. Moody (Young Compay), Wesley Wray (Young Ibrahim), Jesús Pupo (Young Rubén), Renesito Avich (Eliades), Tanairi Sade Vazquez (Young Haydee), Chris Myers (Juan de Marcos) and José “Candelita” Iglesias (The Narrator).
